Storms and floods recorded near Seguin

Because Seguin is in Guadalupe County, the Hays County figures elsewhere on this site do not describe it directly. National Weather Service event summaries do document several significant events in and around Seguin:

October 30, 2015: the Geronimo tornado

On the morning of October 30, 2015, an EF-2 tornado with estimated peak winds of 111–120 mph developed southwest of Geronimo, north of Seguin, and tracked about 8.25 miles toward the New Braunfels airport. The NWS survey found about 20 homes damaged and about 5 destroyed, with damage ranging from lost roofing material to complete removal of roof structures, plus damaged garages, barns, trailers, and farm equipment. The same morning, a separate EF-1 tornado began in Guadalupe County near Centerpoint Road and Old Zorn Road and moved into Hays County.

October 1998: Guadalupe River flooding

During the October 17–18, 1998 floods, the NWS reports that homes were washed off their foundations along the Guadalupe River from Canyon Lake to Seguin. River flooding is generally excluded from homeowners policies, which is why flood insurance matters for river-area properties.

February 2021: Winter Storm Uri

NWS spotters reported 3.0 inches of snow just south-southwest of Seguin on February 15 and another inch on February 18, during more than a week of freezing weather that led to burst pipes across the region.

For other Guadalupe County events, search the NOAA Storm Events Database. Our storm lookup tool covers Hays County reports, which can help you compare a storm’s path as it moved north.

Common insurance claims in Seguin

Documenting a tornado or windstorm claim

Wind claims after a tornado or straight-line winds can be complicated because damage is scattered across the roof, walls, outbuildings, and contents. A few habits make a real difference:

StepWhy it matters
Photograph the whole property before debris removalShows the extent and direction of damage before it is cleared away
List every structure separatelyBarns, sheds, carports, and fences often fall under a separate limit
Keep receipts for tarps, board-up, and tree workReasonable emergency repairs are often reimbursable
Save the NWS survey or storm report for your dateHelps confirm the cause and timing of loss
Track living expenses if you cannot stay homeAdditional living expense coverage may apply

Our claim documentation checklist walks through the full process.

When the wind estimate falls short

After a tornado or severe windstorm, the first estimate is often written quickly and may miss damage that is harder to see: lifted shingles that have not yet blown off, cracked trusses, damaged flashing, broken seals on windows, or interior damage that shows up days later. If you find more damage after the first inspection, report it and ask the insurer to reinspect. A supplement adds missed items or corrected pricing to an open claim, while appraisal is a policy process for resolving a disagreement over the amount of loss. Neither changes what the policy covers. Our claim supplements and insurance appraisal pages explain both.

Permits in Seguin

The City of Seguin has its own permit office, and its requirements are separate from the City of San Marcos. Ask the City of Seguin what it requires before a roof replacement, structural repair, or rebuild. Properties outside city limits in unincorporated Guadalupe County follow county requirements. Code-required upgrades are paid only to the extent your policy’s ordinance or law coverage allows; our building codes guide explains how that works.

How a San Marcos public adjuster helps Seguin property owners

We represent policyholders only. For a Seguin claim, we inspect and document the damage, review your policy and the insurer’s estimate, prepare a detailed estimate, and handle communication with the insurer. If your claim has been denied or underpaid, we can review it with you and discuss options like a supplement or appraisal. We do not guarantee results; coverage depends on your policy.
